Newly minted physicians are in great demand, according to a survey by Merritt Hawkins. More than 63 percent of 2014 final-year residents reported receiving 51 or more job solicitations during their training, while 46 percent reported receiving 100 or more job solicitations. Of those surveyed, 68 percent said they would prefer to be employed by a hospital, medical group or outpatient clinic, with 36 percent preferring a hospital employer. Only 2 percent said they would prefer a solo practice.

Survey respondents said their decisions about employment were most influenced by three factors: geographic location, lifestyle and adequate call/coverage/personal time.
