Hospitals have been spending and scrambling to meet meaningful-use criteria for increased Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements. However, those participating in Hospitals & Health Networks’ Most Wired Survey and Benchmarking Study on IT use are spending more strategically. These tech-savvy organizations (below) invest nearly 8 percent more of their capital budgets on IT than the general population of U.S. community hospitals surveyed by AHA (at right), yet they are spending less to operate it. In fact, community hospitals’ capital investment has dropped in the last four years. Their growing spending on in-house IT staff, however, suggests they are bringing in additional expertise.
