Hospitals are using information technology to beef up medication safety practices. More than half of community institutions with 50 or more beds are capable of using electronic health records to generate and reconcile patient medication lists. Far fewer hospitals have fully implemented computerized provider order entry to order drugs; only 44.8 percent of hospitals with more than 500 beds have fully adopted the technology. Overall, community hospitals are making greater use of their EHR's decision support functions. Even the smallest hospitals are using them to avoid drug interactions and allergies.
