55% of hospitals are affiliated with a health care system.
The majority of these 3,493 hospitals are affiliated with 136 health care systems. System size varies widely: the largest systems number more than 150 facilities while the smallest, those with two hospitals, make up 28 percent of the total number of systems. Eighty-one percent of systems are considered local, meaning their affiliated hospitals are located in one or two states, while 18 percent are more national, with affiliated hospitals in 10 or more states. Nearly three-quarters of affiliated hospitals are located in urban settings, and Texas, California and Pennsylvania are home to the most health care systems.
